What's Race Got to Do With It: How Market-Based School Reform Maintains Racial and Economic Inequality

Abstract

Within critical discussions of school reform, researchers and activists are often of two camps. Some focus on neoliberal economic agendas, while others center on racial inequality. These analyses often happen in isolation, continuing to divide those concerned with educational justice into “It’s race!” vs. “It’s class!” camps.

This symposium brings together these analyses to ask what role race plays in hallmark policies of neoliberal school reforms, with a specific eye towards the Trump/DeVos era. Each panelist, in taking on a specific neoliberal education reform, reveals the ways in which education reform works through race to structure economic inequality, provides historical context, and shares grassroots stories of resistance to these reforms.
