Session Type: Symposium
This symposium investigates arts-centered communities to discover vital and creative practices of collective learning activity. Drawing and expanding upon social practice theories, the authors juxtapose the worlds of eSports, dramatic improvisation, fan cosplay, experimental music, and robotics labs to discover cross-contextual patterns that activate possibilities for enlivened and dynamic forms of learning. We foreground issues of social justice, power, and inequality as we consider how these practices might open possibilities for the inclusion of historically marginalized students. Finally, we present the perspectives of leaders and stakeholders from these communities to consider how insights from arts-centered learning might transform organizations at the institutional level to foster artistic, affectively-charged, and embodied educational experiences.
