While educators must always recognize the talent, brilliance, and vigor of young people persisting through everyday life in our country's most vulnerable urban neighborhoods, studies show many youth experience trauma. Educators must understand how students’ health and achievement is shaped by experiences of structural violence across ghetto schooling and community. This panel draws from transdisciplinary research on wellness and 'dis-ease' in urban communities to reexamine developmental demands of urban ecologies on youth. Thus, our driving research question: How can the science of student wellness help educational researchers and practitioners address the needs of students of color more effectively, including providing pedagogical frameworks to facilitates better understanding of toxicity experienced by urban youth, and inversely, one that cultivates healing, hope, and resilience?
