The session investigates relationships between restructuration theory (Wilensky & Papert, 2010), complexity education and democratizing participation in scientific practices. Restructuration theory builds on a long history of psychological and historical research that has argued that representational forms shape human knowledge and understanding, both at the individual and societal level (Goody,1977; Olson,1994; diSessa, 2001). Specifically, Wilensky and Papert (2010) argue that the advent of agent-based computational modeling can enable anyone - young learners and members of the “lay” public - to engage in scientific modeling of complex systems. This session investigates how such democratic participation in scientific cultures can be supported through the design of different activity systems, in different settings, with different groups of participants, and across different disciplines.
