Division F Fireside Chat. Twice as Good: Navigating Marginality in Graduate School

Abstract

Marginalization is a major issue for graduate students of color in their graduate studies. As such, Division F Fireside Chat would like to concentrate on the challenges students of color encounter in navigating their graduate studies. It has been heavily documented that graduate students of color are not only underrepresented in higher education but are also faced with feelings of isolation, microaggressions, and manifestations of structural racism. As the title of our session indicates, students of color often feel pressured to be “twice as good” while facing more scrutiny, and receiving less support than their white counterparts. Therefore our Fireside Chat will focus on discussing strategies to improve the academic experience of students of color as they navigate graduate school.
