Division K Critical Dialogues: Defining and Measuring Good Teaching for All Students

Abstract

Teachers have powerful effects on their students’ learning and lives. There is little agreement, however, on what constitutes “good” teaching, especially for students historically mis-served by our nation’s schools. How we define, measure and evaluate “good” teaching raise questions about the aims of teaching and who it serves. This interactive session brings together educational policymakers and researchers of policy, measurement, teacher education and community-school partnerships to engage in critical dialogues with audience members, including educators and youth, about their visions of good teaching, how it can be identified and how we can ensure that all students have access to it. The session will challenge researchers to consider how their work can support “good” teaching for all children.
