Children, Policies of Containment, and the Carceral State

Abstract

Over the past year, close to 70,000 migrant children were held in government custody in the United States. Relatedly, punitive policies in US schools lead to the disproportionate criminalizing and targeting of Black and Brown bodies as mechanism of the carceral state. This session explores these processes and poses the following questions: How can we conceptualize, identify, and address the enduring impact of the carceral state and politics of containment on children within American Education? And what role are educators and activists playing in pushing back against carceral logics in our schools and broader society?
