Teacher Leadership in U.S. National Blue Ribbon Schools

Thu, April 8, 2:00 to 3:00pm EDT (2:00 to 3:00pm EDT), Division K, Division K - Section 2 Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) are a select group of US schools recognized for their success at either overall student achievement or closing achievement gaps. The first purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how a sample of US NBRS supported teacher leaders. The second purpose was to examine espoused teacher leadership in these schools for alignment with the Teacher Leader Model Standards (Teacher Leadership Exploratory Consortium, 2012). I examined written applications of 25 US NBRS from 2019. Results included five themes: Supportive Culture for Teacher Leadership, Teachers as Instructional Leaders, Teachers as Decision Makers, Teachers as Innovators, and Teachers as Leaders Beyond their Schools.
