Rasch/Guttman-Based Scenario (RGS) Scales: Development and Benefits

Abstract

This paper presents a novel scale development methodology for the creation of Rasch/Guttman-based scenario (RGS) scales and discusses the interpretive benefits of the methodology. Through a combination of Rasch principles and Guttman facet design, RGS scales result in scores with meaningful, qualitative interpretations. In addition to presenting the steps in RGS scale development, this paper highlights the utility of completed RGS scales compared to more traditional, Likert scales.
