This study focuses on teacher reflection on the first Standard for Mathematical Practice (SMP 1) within the post-lesson debrief of an Open-Approach Lesson Study. The study allows the mathematics education community to gain knowledge about teacher dialogue, promotion, and understanding related to SMP 1 (CCSSI, 2010). Looking at the ways in which teachers discuss SMPs and build professional knowledge as a team is necessary to continue the professionalization of teachers in regards to knowledge and implementation of mathematical practices among students. Specifically, knowing whether the teachers are addressing SMP 1, discussing SMP 1 with fidelity, or showing common misconceptions about SMP 1 is important to note when studying the post-reflections of a lesson study group.
