This 1-year study explored the process of implementing an activist approach (Authors, 2015) in an after-school sports club. Participants included 13 middle schoolers from a local charter school, a university professor, a doctoral candidate, 1 graduate and 2 undergraduate students in a PETE program. Data collection included 22 club sessions, weekly debriefing meetings, informal conversation with the undergraduate/graduate students, teacher artifacts and a personal journal. An un expected element that emerged within the sports club was a leadership aspect developed by youth, allowing us to understand the process of co-creating a sustainable and student-centered after-school sports club.
