Parents manage and influence their child’s academic success in multiple ways. While prior research mostly focused on the role of parental involvement (PI), parents may also cast their influence by serving as role models when parents themselves also attend college. The relationship between PI and parental modeling, and how they are related to high school child’s college attendance, was explored. Analyzing a nationally representative panel data, parental modeling is positively related to the use of PI, which in turn is associated with the child’s college attendance within three years after high school graduation. Teachers and counselors may utilize the findings to advise parents regarding students’ educational aspiration.
