Discouraging Last-Minute Homework Submission: A Preliminary Exploration of Self-Regulated Learning Among Female Students in Quantitative-Related Courses

Mon, April 12, 2:50 to 4:20pm EDT (2:50 to 4:20pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 2a: Cognitive and Motivational Processes Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

The challenges of completing homework revolve around meeting the deadlines and avoiding procrastination. Studies recommend the promotion of self-regulated learning (SRL) for overcoming the challenges. This study explored the role of SRL on the timeliness of homework submissions performed by undergraduate female students in the context of learning quantitative topics. Survey and Learning Management System log were used for data collection. Hierarchical linear regression results indicate that the motivational components of SRL significantly affect the timeliness of homework submission; self-efficacy and task value are the significant predictors. Adding the learning strategies components does not significantly change the variance in the timeliness of homework submission. However, both self-efficacy and task value are still significant predictors in addition to effort regulation.
