Design Cycle: A Studio Course Goes Online (Survives a Pandemic), Then Modifies the Face-to-Face Studio

Thu, April 8, 12:00 to 1:00pm EDT (12:00 to 1:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Design and Technology Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

A graduate studio course in instructional graphics moves to asynchronous online format after a decade of face-to-face development and evolution in its design. This design case documents radical revisions to the course necessitated by its first online iteration, and subsequent refinements required to account for limitations students faced during a pandemic, in which some were isolated from resources and many were faced with increased burdens on their time. In particular, the non-traditional form of critique practiced in the face-to-face course was translated into a technology-supported format which will likely be used in the face-to-face course when it is taught in the future. Features of this course are expected to inform revisions in the required studio sequence of this masters program.
