Recruiting, supporting and retaining STEM teachers has been an ongoing challenge, particularly for urban schools. This issue is both urgent and global. To address this need in our local context, we designed and implemented a program called Transforming & Innovative Practices in STEM Education (TIPS) - a year-long program to recruit STEM majors of color into teaching. This paper is a report on lessons from our second cohort, we discuss what we learned when we attempted to recruit high quality STEM majors into teaching. Our purpose is to share lessons from this collaborative project between Education and STEM faculty on how to support STEM majors who are interested in teaching.
