Connection, Uncertainty, and Identity: Leveraging Video Reflection in Teacher Education

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Portfolios and Reflection in Teaching and Teacher Education Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

Preservice teachers (PSTs) enrolled in teacher education courses are routinely asked to reflect on their observations and experiences, and the development of reflective practice for PSTs is widely accepted as a worthwhile goal in the development of future educators. Teacher education courses often include assignments that require PSTs to write reflections based on their experiences in schools and classrooms. While writing is a worthwhile mode of reflection, it neglects other modes of reflection such as speaking, drawing, creating graphics or engaging in dialogue with others. In this proposed presentation, we explore the use of speaking as captured by video as a mode of reflection for PSTs to consider their experiences in the field.
