Pandemic, Genocide, and Barbarism: Challenges for Critical Education in Brazil

Thu, April 8, 12:00 to 1:00pm EDT (12:00 to 1:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Critical Educators for Social Justice Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

The text analyzes the data on the coronavirus pandemic and the public responses aiming at discussing the challenges for ensuring the human right to life in Brazil. Despite of heading the coronavirus-denial group and conducting a genocide in Brazil, the president's approval rate is around 33%. It’s argued that this scenario of barbarism is the result of the increased exploitation of labor that became possible due to the systematic destruction of public education and curriculum narrowing. Considering Freire’s theoretical framework, the text is dialectically constructed with the denouncement of the situation of barbarism and the announcement of strategies that can be taken by the working class to overcome it, in a struggle for humanization and radical social transformation.
