Quantitative research, as a field, has only recently taken up questions of “queer” and “queerness” in educational research. While these topics have seen broad and elastic uptake in qualitative research, they have been less present in quantitative work. In this paper, we explore how “queer” has been taken up in the available quantitative literature, question and critique the ways that uptake of “queer,” and offer implications for future research. In particularly, we discuss the following patterns: the stabilization of queer identities and stripping them of radical meanings and potentials, the lack of inclusion of gender identity, the lack of attention to race and intersectionality, and the ways that quantitative methods were taken up.
