This systematic literature review synthesizes empirical research on learning with 3D printing technology in various educational settings, focusing on publication and study participants’ characteristics, curriculum areas, research methodologies, instructional approaches, educational outcomes and benefits. A comprehensive survey of published and unpublished studies identified 70 empirical studies that met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that most of the studies were implemented in formal educational settings, in STEM and medical disciplines. Research on learning with 3D printing technology was not limited to a particular age group, academic level, or educational context. In addition to positive effects on student learning, 3D printing facilitated innovative curriculum development and created opportunities for cross- and interdisciplinary research.
