This paper will analyze the self-reported perceptions of pre-service teacher candidates regarding the effectiveness of English-learner (EL)-focused coaching conducted within a EL micro-credentialing program. The coaching took place in two simulation formats: micro-teaching and TLE TeachLivE™. While pre-service teachers role-played the part of the ELs during micro-teaching, TLE TeachLivE™ provided a virtual classroom with virtual avatars representing ELs at different levels of language proficiency. Trained coaches provided feedback in both formats. The study will examine whether there have been format-specific differences in participants’ self-reported perceptions regarding the effectiveness of coaching focusing on EL teaching skills. The discussion will focus on descriptive statistics as well as the qualitative findings resulting from analyzing 64 participants ‘responses to a 14-item survey.
