Orchestrating talk between students is a complex task for teachers. Traditionally, science educators have used rehearsals (teaching peers) to train Elementary Pre-service Teachers (EPSTs) with specific teaching skills. New innovative technologies such as virtual simulation software, Mursion® (developed as TeachLivE™), provides a new context using student avatars when rehearsing teaching practices. This NSF-supported work explores the use of rehearsals within virtual simulations as compared to traditional rehearsals. Results showed that EPSTs in both environments increased in their use of various talk moves. The treatment group increased in teacher moves that address student ideas and/or understanding. This finding suggests EPSTs felt comfortable questioning student avatars ideas and promoting student engagement in a virtual simulation environment.
