A growing interest in the application of Gal’perin’s (1962) model of instruction has developed in the foreign/second language education field. This presentation reports on a study that explored how adult beginner learners of Italian as a foreign language, who received six two-hour lessons that followed Gal’perin’s model, used the Schema for a Complete Basis of Action (SCOBA) to convey the Systemic Functional Linguistic concept of typified situation of a service encounter and used Italian language in a study abroad trip. Gal’perin’s model allowed students to develop awareness of how to use cultural and linguistic concepts to orient themselves in classroom tasks and in study abroad experiences in Italy with native speakers and fostered discourse development from other-regulated to self-regulated performance.
