Sun, April 11, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Science Teaching and Learning Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

Teachers have a more important role in affecting the academic success of minority students when compared to white students, especially among minority students who rarely interact with college-educated individuals outside of the school. Teachers' perceptions influence their belief in and expectations of their students. Analyzing data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, the study ascertained that teacher expectation and student race impacted student achievement and self-efficacy in math and science courses. However, teacher belief did not have an impact on student achievement and self-efficacy in math and science courses.
