Test consequences refer to the effects of a certain test on test-takers, programs and institutions (Bachman & Palmer, 2010). This qualitative study researched the consequences of an English placement test for graduate international students at a university in the United States. The study used seven semi-structured interviews, syllabi of the ESL classes and a program booklet that details the philosophy of ESL classes. Preliminary results produced from analysis of four interviews showed that the four participants had mixed ideas regarding the consequences of the English placement test and the ESL classes. In general, two students and one teacher thought the consequences of the test and the classes were negative, while the administrator believed they were positive.
