To Go or Not to Go? Estimating Community College Attendance Effect on STEM Baccalaureate Completion

Thu, April 8, 5:00 to 6:00pm EDT (5:00 to 6:00pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

An increasing number of students are utilizing community colleges as a pathway to STEM baccalaureate education at four-year institutions. This study examined the possible attendance effect on STEM baccalaureate completion for community college transfer students. Prior studies yielded equivocal research findings on this topic. The study addressed research gap by obtaining more rigorously matched samples which were then used to run logistic regression analysis. Research results suggested there is no negative attendance effect on STEM baccalaureate degree completion within six years. Research findings have important implications for research and practice that aim to promote student learning and academic success in STEM fields.
