Our study provides an empirical overview of current research on parental involvement. Co-word analysis was applied to 544 articles published between 2014-2018, followed by a review, based on thematic analysis, of 39 selected Q1 articles to offer a deeper, more fine-grained illustration of the PI knowledge base. Our analysis revealed four main research areas (policy, inequality, schooling, achievements), with disadvantaged groups constituting a central focus in each area. We conclude that current PI research highlights the importance of school leaders and teachers in promoting parental involvement in low SES and minority/migrant families, and thus that educators are well positioned to help mitigate social gaps. It is therefore desirable that teacher training programs be informed by recent PI research.
