The aim of this article is to review international evidence about pathways to higher education (HE) for refugees and displaced populations. The review focuses on peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2020, aiming to answer three questions: (1) What are the main reception policies that have enabled refugees to access HE? (2) Which barriers hinder refugees' access pathways to HE? (3) What are the main challenges facing refugee students in HE institutions in different countries? Three central themes emerged from a review of 45 articles: (a) reception policies, both national and institutional; (b) access pathways, and (c) refugee students' challenges. Subthemes are presented for each theme. The article concludes with several methodological conclusions, recommendations for further research and policy implications.
