Alternatively certified teachers (AC teachers) are being hired increasingly in many countries, even though they often lack in-depth pedagogical training and didactic skills. This study sheds light on why AC teachers choose this career, how they evaluate their well-being, and how long they intend to stay in the profession. The data originate from a teacher survey of 443 traditionally certified teachers (TC teachers) and 147 AC teachers at secondary schools in Germany. Multivariate covari-ance analyses show that AC teachers and TC teachers differ in some motives for teaching. Further-more, AC teachers report higher enthusiasm for teaching, lower levels of emotional exhaustion, and a higher intention to stay in the profession.
