This study extends research on the social and emotional characteristics of gifted individuals to those at the college level, using data from the 2019 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to explore honors program participation and mental well-being in a sample of 11,268 students at 10 different universities. A series of OLS regression models suggest that after controlling for demographic and institutional characteristics, honors programs participants are not experiencing any more stress, depression, or mental/emotional exhaustion than general education college students. These results are promising for recruiting and reassuring future honors program participants, as they refute the stereotype that all of the extra demands and academic rigor of honors programs lead to overwhelming amounts of stress for students.
