This article is a synthesis of 29 empirical studies includes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research conducted from year 2005 to 2019. The synthesis indicated that due to the lack of high quality of these studies, it is difficult to arrive at a conclusion that whether digital game-based learning on vocabulary acquisition is effective for EFL or ESL although most of those studies claimed the effectiveness. High-quality research in this area is need and we recommend specific consideration be given to educational design quality of vocabulary digital games in future research.
