Students in an early childhood teacher preparation program experienced tremendous upheaval during their Spring semester practicum placement. The global pandemic resulted in them being removed from the field of the school and thrust into the virtual field as they attempted to continue their practicum online. Using Bourdieusian theoretical concepts, such as field, habitus, hysteresis, and doxa, this study explores answers to questions of personal and professional impacts these abrupt changes brought about. Interviews, written assignments, virtual exchanges, and post-placement interviews with these preservice teachers served as windows to their experiences of loss, adaptation, and transformation during an unprecedented and uncertain time.
