In responding to epochal change, we cannot continue to rely on the same approaches to research. To this end, we have been riffing off of the lyric philosophy developed by Canadian philosopher Jan Zwicky. We suggest that our riffs take the form of a series of small research experiments that offer an avenue forward for researchers determined to try something different. Our experiments rest on two concerns. The first is a need to problematize issues of control—epistemological and methodological. By this we are suggesting a need for research methodologies that consciously seek to help practitioners break free from implicit authorities that exert control—that bend the ways we live and the ways we conduct research, towards conventional norms.
