The Effective Use of Formative Assessment in the Context of Universal Design for Learning

Abstract

Formative assessment is the process used by teachers to reveal students’ strengths and weaknesses and provide opportunities to improve learning. Effective implementation of formative assessment requires a flexible learning environment, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which celebrates the diversity of each student and offers teachers guidelines for addressing students’ unique needs. This qualitative study describes UDL teachers’ implementation of formative assessment as an ongoing process, adjusting instructions, and adapting the environment to meet the needs of diverse learners. Teachers report that the UDL framework supports their ability to effectively implement formative assessment. This study further reveals how teachers take responsibility to proactively prepare instructions and assessment activities to meet the needs of each student.
