Using Structural Equation Modeling to Explore the Implementation of the Teaching Quality Standard in Alberta, Canada

Thu, April 8, 3:00 to 4:00pm EDT (3:00 to 4:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Educational Change Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

A new Teaching Quality Standard (TQS) was announced the Alberta Education Minister of Education that was implemented in September 2019. The implementation was accompanied by a mixed methods four-year longitudinal research study to support and guide implementation efforts. Survey results are reported from first year of the implementation of the TQS. Using structured equation modeling to explore how different variables are connected, three findings emerged: i) professional learning in one area indicates the need for professional learning in other areas, ii) the greater a teacher’s implementation of an inclusive environment, the greater the need for professional learning in relationship building, and iii) there is no relationship between teachers implementation of building a professional knowledge base and reported professional learning needs.
