Building effective school leadership teams is at the forefront of today’s research agenda. Yet, there is still no comprehensive literature review focusing on effective school leadership teams. Research to date has mainly promoted our understanding of team processes, but there are still limitations, including (a) a common assumption of within-team homogeneity in team processes, (b) scant concern for emergent states, (c) imbalance of research between each element of team effectiveness, and (d) absence of a conceptual framework that provides a comprehensive picture of how leadership teams perform effectively. This study explores the composition of the knowledge base, identifies thematic trends, and synthesizes findings from the research on school leadership team effectiveness and suggests future directions for research.
