Pathways to Constructivism: A Cross-Examination of Science and Mathematics Lessons

Thu, April 8, 12:00 to 1:00pm EDT (12:00 to 1:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Constructivist Theory, Research, and Practice Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

The constructivism principles informed many of the reformed-oriented approach used in classrooms today; however, many teachers still struggle with implementing lessons that embody its principles. One of the reasons is the absence of a clear pathway to guide them. The study unpacks core features of constructivism, actively constructed, prior knowledge, social context-based, and real-world connection, and used processes such as inquiry-based learning and mathematical tasks, along with action words from the 5E model to create a practical way teachers can utilize in planning effective science and mathematics student-centered lessons. For teachers to effectively respond to students’ educational needs, a collaborative effort by researchers and practitioners will ensure students’ have productive learning experiences
