The student-centered active learning environment for undergraduate physics (SCALE-UP) is a designed learning environment and pedagogical innovation. Extensive work on SCALE-UP has reported student learning gains; difference in pre and posttest scores. However, more research is needed to understand this innovation. This research examined three students as they worked in a small group. Our purpose was to identify and describe patterns in gender dynamics, as a first step towards understanding equity within this SCALE-UP. Findings suggest that even though SCALE-UP seeks to leverage student agency, negative gender dynamics abound. Also, contestation for roles centered around the setting up and control of lab equipment was key in how the woman’s experiences of negative gender dynamics influenced her patterns of participation
