Exploring the Context and Interactional Dynamics of Undergraduate Students' First Mathematics Advising Experiences

Abstract

The proposed project explores the advising practices for incoming, first-year undergraduate students by a mathematics department. Through the analysis of video-recorded advising sessions, the interactional dynamics of an undergraduate mathematics advising program will be explored. In particular, we describe how gender impacts both the structure and content of mathematics advising sessions.
