Antiblackness Within a Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Institutional Context: How Black Male Narratives Trouble "Cross-Racial Interactions"

Sun, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Paper and Symposium Sessions 2

Abstract

This qualitative study examined Black men undergraduate students engaging in cross-racial interactions at a public, four-year, Hispanic-serving institution in Southern California. Using critical race theory as the theoretical framework and methodology, the authors composed a composite counterstory to showcase their findings regarding Black men who have a deep desire for cross-racial friendships but are met with rejection and racial stress from their non-Black peers. This article concludes with a call for cross-racial interactions scholars to critically highlight the racial realities of Students of Color, instead of portraying a narrative of racial unity that is contrary to the experiences of racially oppressed groups.
