The term intertextuality is presented and used as a concept and method that offers a Bakhtinian framework for the analysis and interpretation of narrative picture books. Texts do not appear in isolation, but in relation to other texts. The present paper uses intertextual analysis to draw a comparison between Bakhtinian concepts and 9 narrative picture books. It further examines two kindergarten ENL’s responses and social interactions to open-ended questions when narrative texts are read-aloud. The results revealed the importance of using intertextual features to support young ENL kindergarten students’ oral discourse and meaning making.
