The Covid-19 pandemic calls for a serious re-valuing of the significant role parents perform as pedagogues in their children’s education. Focusing on the under-researched field of 0-3-year-olds’ early literacy learning in the contemporary home, this paper draws on case studies of two children to illustrate how parents can nurture very young children’s creative use of digital media as part of everyday home literacy practices. Building on nascent research in this field, the paper argues for the need to reconceptualise the Home Literacy Environment as a digitally networked space, where society’s very youngest children negotiate affectively intense relationships and make meaning across diverse modes and media as they connect with distant family and friends in a digitally-mediated world.
