Our School of Education (SoE) recently began exploring a significant transformation to our candidates’ field and practicum experiences: replacing traditional student teaching experiences with teaching residencies for all programs. We believe the residency model with its emphasis on deep clinical experiences and extensive mentoring can enhance greatly the readiness of prospective elementary, secondary, bilingual and special education teachers. To ready our preparation work for this next evolution of partnership, however, required a significant and sustained reinvestment in our work with the diverse members of our educational community. This proposal documents our work to advance a truly community-engaged framework, to set goals, to articulate outcomes, and to construct tools for evaluating new teacher competencies collectively and communally with our preparation stakeholders.
