Despite a long and continuing history of discrimination and mistreatment from society, transgender and non-binary teachers and teachers of color continue to be erased or made invisible by current large-scale survey research investigating teachers in education. Representing one such example, the 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) provides only a binary female/male option for gender and includes no option for race/racism or ethnicity. This research examines the intersection of gender and race/racism through a QuantCrit framework. A statistical argument is made for the inclusion of more diverse gender options through the use of a ‘reverse imputation’ method. Implications, recommendations, and limitations for current and future educational survey research are discussed.
