Abstract: Increased rigor of physical therapist curricula and growing diverse student populations have raised concerns for the academic success and retention of all students. While physical therapist programs often admit highly qualified applicants, 5-25% of students will likely experience departure in the early year of studies. Despite the robust literature in learning communities improving student outcomes and experiences, there is limited evidence available on experiences of learning communities among physical therapist students. In this study, I explored the construction of learning communities to support first-year academic success. Results indicated that engagement in learning communities contributed to positive changes in academic performance as well as clinical competencies.
