There is a growing interest in the relationship between philosophy and engineering. The purpose of this proposal is to explore the philosophical concept of Bildung (self-development) in the field of engineering to develop reflective engineers through their autobiographical stories. In this proposal, we share engineering graduate students’ autobiographical stories of Bildung—stories of their self-development—as a way to develop reflective engineers. Lessons learned from analysis of these stories along with student interviews are shared to make implications for engineering graduate education. In so doing, we hope to contribute to the interdisciplinary field of philosophy of engineering in rethinking engineering education.
