Abstract

Each year, considerable effort and money are invested into new technologies in the hopes of finding the next effective learning tool. This paper identifies the major trends in K-12 educational technology adoption from 2011 to 2021 by analyzing the Horizon Reports and using bibliometric analysis to evaluate the accuracy of the predictions. The results suggest there was a trend towards maker technologies and games in the earlier part of the decade, mobile and analytics technologies trended consistently across the period, while VR and AI are predicted to trend in the near future. Overall, the major technology trends seem to coincide with the availability of consumer grade technologies, suggesting that the technology industry is driving trends (cf., pedagogy or theory).
