Computer Science Learning and Inquiring With Students Through Equity Networks (CS-LISTEN): Using Youth Participatory Action Research to Broaden Participation of Underrepresented Groups in K–12 Computer Science

Thu, April 8, 12:00 to 1:00pm EDT (12:00 to 1:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Action Research Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Computer Science Learning and Inquiring with Students through Equity Networks (CS-LISTEN) is a youth participatory action research (YPAR) project that investigates the lack of diversity in K-12 computer science (CS) education. By engaging academically, racially, and socially diverse students in student co-research (SCR) groups, our teams uncovered new understandings as to why some groups are disengaged from and underrepresented in CS. Each SCR team developed its own research questions and methodology related to increasing representation in CS coursework. Ultimately, we hope that conference participants will be inspired by this project that seeks to engage youth in tackling social justice issues. We encourage conference participants to facilitate student action in their communities and will provide resources to allow for local adaptation.
