To address the need to more comprehensively understand how Women of Color (WOC) successfully navigate STEM majors, this study seeks to illuminate social factors that may contribute to understanding how WOC conceptualize studying and approach learning biology. Related literature associates deep learning approaches with high academic achievement. However, inconsistencies with defining the act of studying leads to misalignment between faculty expectations and student study behaviors. Few studies consider the multiple social factors that make up and influence the act of studying in a way that is useful for faculty and students. This study proposes a multidimensional way to conceptualize studying and explores diverse conceptualizations of studying and the relationship of approaches to learning, metacognitive regulations, and learning outcomes of WOC.
