The Influence of Place in Researchers' Autobiographical Narrative Inquiries

Sun, April 11, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Narrative and Research Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

This project is an exploration of the ways in which place shapes our lives as narrative inquirers. Deweyan notions of experience and Clandinin and Connelly (2000)’s work on the narrative inquiry framed our work. Through these lenses, we explored the phenomena of place and its role in the retelling that narrative inquiry engenders. Writings about places, photographs, memory boxes, and accounts of our interactions comprise our interim and field texts. Through these texts and conversation, we examined these accounts within the three-dimensional narrative space—exploring our situatedness, looking inward and outward and considering temporality in our experience of place as researchers. The threads of continuity, relationship and ethics emerged providing insight into the development of narrative inquirers.
