Extensive research shows that Social-Emotional Competency (SEC) has a positive effect on students' learning and growth. School engagement also reflect a commitment to learning and successful academic performance. This paper examines the effects of SEC on academic achievement via students’ cognitive, emotional and behavior engagement in western China. And further examines the rejected group students’ differences in these constructs and how these constructs have differential relationship with academic achievement. It found that high SEC is associated with better student’ school engagement and better students’ academic achievement, and school engagement is the mediate association between SEC and academic achievement. Rejected students are at a disadvantage in SEC and school engagement, which lead to poor academic achievement.
